La Chica Mala 1 kilo a.k.a. Juana Chancla

This month’s BGOTM comes from guest writers and Mala’s team captains, Velveteen Savage and Friskie Meow.

La Chica Mala has been B.A.D. Girl of the Month so many times we’ve lost count, and the recognition is more than deserved. This woman dedicates most of her waking (and some sleeping) hours to B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls and our Peralta headquarters. There really isn’t enough space to list everything Mala does for B.A.D. She does it all with a smile and her menagerie of rescued animals in tow.

A skater since 2007, she started with B.A.D. as a member of the Oakland Outlaw crew. She quickly became known for her tenacious jamming and fierce blocking on the track, and for her awe-inspiring work ethic off the track. Always looking out for the league’s best interest, in 2010 she volunteered to leave her beloved Outlaws to become a core veteran skater for the newest B.A.D. home team, the Berkeley Resistance.

Not only is Mala an integral part of the Resistance as both an ambassador of fun and as a hybrid jammer/blocker, she has made Berkeley’s living room one of the best at Peralta. She hosts periodic margarita nights, presides over regularly occurring gab fests, and somehow acquires fancy leather couches for free! As a whole, Peralta would not be the home it is today without Mala’s hard work and dedication.

Wait, did we already mention that she’s a sick skater? Mala holds the second highest Berkeley Resistance record for most points scored in a single jam! The famous 26 point jam! And she wins MVP almost every time we skate an away bout. (DISCLAIMER: She harasses the announcers into saying she’s MVP even if she’s not, so we aren’t really sure on that one.) She jams with the quickness and blocks with the fierceness, and (watch out!!) she has been putting in countless hours working on her jumping and backwards skating. She has recently been spending time in other colors, lending her expertise to teams in need, but we all know she looks the best in tie dye.

However, it is with a heavy heart that we inform you all of the passing of her adopted son Simone, a great white shark. Mala, along with adoptive partner Auntie Christ, loved Simone from afar and was devastated to learn of his untimely demise. If you would like to share your condolences, you are invited to participate in a card game with the Berkeley Resistance, played on a deck of aquatic-themed, holographic cards featuring the likeness of her beloved Simone.  The memorial card game will be held immediately following Thursday night scrimmage. In lieu of flowers please leave donations of margarita salt in the hippie corner.
